Gábor Viktor Kozma
Theatre Maker, Acting Coach, Ph.D., Assistant Professor at UBB Cluj, Co-Artistic Director of the Chance of the Hunter
Gábor was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1990. Between 2009 and 2012 he studied at the Pesti Magyar Acting Academy, after which he successfully passed the entrance exam to the University of Arts in Tîrgu-Mureș, Romania. He graduated (MA) as an actor and acting pedagogue in 2017. That same year Gábor started his doctoral research on methods of actor training at the University of Arts in Tîrgu-Mureș. The board of the Hungarian Academy of Arts’ 2018-2021 Scholarships Program awarded Gábor's doctoral and artistic research for support. Between 2019 and 2023 he was a teaching assistant at the University of Babeș-Bolyai in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, since then he has been an assistant professor and the tutor of the acting class. In 2021 he received an Exceptional Alumni Scholarship from the Hungarian Academy of Arts. A Ph.D. doctorate with Summa Cum Laude was awarded to him in 2022 at the University of Arts in Tîrgu-Mureș. Gábor is driven by constant research and the desire to develop his skills and experience. During 2012 and 2013 he participated in a Method Acting workshop with Antonio Paolo Simioni in Budapest and Rome. He studied voice technique in Brussels with Anne-Marie Blink, then spent three months at the Lithuanian Music and Theatre Academy in Vilnius in 2014. At the Academy, he took classes such as Biomechanics, Suzuki Method of Actor Training, Keith Johnstone’s Impro-technique, Chekhov-technique, and more. In 2015 he participated in the Suzuki Company of Toga’s international summer training program in Toga, Japan. Gábor was then invited to perform with the International Suzuki Company of Toga in 2016 where he was directed by Sebastian Mattia and Tadashi Suzuki. He continues to have a working relationship with SCOT and ISCOT. Gábor has been leading workshops on the Suzuki Method since 2016. In 2018 he took part in several courses like the Chekhov-technique workshop led by Gretchen Egolf, Ray's clown course, and a workshop on biomechanics led by Vladimir Granov. During the fall of 2018, Gábor spent two months in New York City participating in the Morning Studio program of the SITI Company and working with the director students of Columbia University as an actor in their assignments. He participated at the Belgrade International Chekhov Workshop+Fest as a resident in 2019 and he organized and took part as a trainee in the workshops of the Ladder Art Company such as Chekhov Workshop with Gretchen Egolf and Music and Physicality with Esztella Levko.
Gábor is a co-artistic director of the Chance of the Hunter theatre ensemble based in Budapest. In 2021 accompanied by the Ladder Art Company they organized the I. International Workshop Forum in Budapest which hosted workshops of the members of OTP Gadzienice and artists of the SITI Company. The II. volume of the Forum was held in 2023 where Ellen Lauren and Will Bond were teaching Viewpoints and Composition. Since 2016 Gábor has continuously published his research papers. In 2022 and 2023 he participated in an Erasmus+ VET Research Program led by the Ladder Art Company. He and Mátyás Marofka were researching the methodology of the individual actor training. As a result, they published a handbook that is available HERE. Gábor has been a part of the SITI Alumni Network Ambassador Program since 2022.
He directed his first professionally devised theatre performance in 2020 called 999. The premiere was at Trafó Contemporary House of Arts in Budapest, but the performance was played at the Voila! Festival London (2022) and in Cluj-Napoca also.
In 2022 he received the Excellentia Award at the Babeș-Bolyai University for his teaching practice. Besides his academic teaching practice, Gábor led several workshops in Hungary and abroad (Romania, Slovakia, Spain, the U.K., the Netherlands and France).
Gábor believes that art and art pedagogy are tools to discover the world and human nature. He is a dedicated theatre person who believes that open-mindedness and an interest in new impulses are essential for all perspectives of life. He feels it is his duty to continue to explore different cultures and exchanges of international experience.
